Thick, mineral air settles around you as you step through thresholds of darkened stone, and trace the cold geometry of a place neither living nor dead. The ghosts of ancient cypresses lean where they always have, and just as you’re beginning to shift your mind to more ancient time-keeping, the sweeping tide drowns out all reminders of the past. No one ever stays long, and as the water returns with urgency, the whispers that brought you out past the shore are swept away from you as you return.
